Based on coverage from Sask Today and Sask Today.
Saskatchewan RCMP have made two separate arrests involving wanted men this month, including an update in the southeast that closes the loop on a public request for help locating a suspect.
The cases unfolded hundreds of kilometres apart, but both include familiar themes: outstanding warrants, travel between communities, and warnings to the public not to intervene.
Carnduff RCMP arrest Ryan Smith
The Saskatchewan RCMP say the Carnduff/Estevan detachment arrested 37-year-old Ryan Smith on June 17 in Carnduff.
Smith had been the subject of a public alert issued May 13, when Carnduff RCMP asked residents to report sightings and tips about his whereabouts. Police said at the time he was wanted on two warrants from the Carnduff RCMP, with charges that included assault, uttering threats, and failing to comply with release conditions.
Those charges were linked to what police described as an ongoing assault investigation reported to Carnduff RCMP at the beginning of May.
Estevan Provincial Court date set June 22
RCMP say Smith is scheduled to appear in Estevan Provincial Court on June 22.
When the public alert was issued in May, RCMP described Smith as 5'11" and about 165 pounds, with blue eyes and brown-and-grey hair, and said he had previously had a beard. The release also said he was known to travel to Estevan, Oxbow, and Weyburn.
At that time, police urged people not to approach him and to report information to RCMP or anonymously through Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers.
Highway 155 arrest leads to weapons seizure
In a separate case in northern Saskatchewan, RCMP say officers arrested a wanted man after getting a report on June 16 that he was travelling in an SUV on Highway 155 between Île-à-la-Crosse and Beauval.
RCMP say officers from the Île-à-la-Crosse and Beauval detachments found the SUV parked on the side of the highway and arrested both the wanted man and a passenger. Police allege the wanted man initially gave a false name.
During a search of the vehicle, RCMP say they found and seized an imitation firearm, an axe, and a firearm. The passenger was released without charges.
Charges for Eagles Lake IR man
RCMP say a 37-year-old man from Eagles Lake IR, part of Canoe Lake Cree First Nation, now faces a list of weapons-related and other charges:
- possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle - six counts of weapons possession contrary to an order - operation while prohibited - possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose - resisting or obstructing a peace officer - identity fraud - possession of a firearm while knowing possession was unauthorized
RCMP also say the man was wanted on a Saskatchewan RCMP warrant for other alleged offences, including robbery with a firearm, assault, assault with a weapon, aggravated assault, pointing a firearm, and flight from a peace officer.
He is scheduled to appear in court in Île-à-la-Crosse on June 24. RCMP say the investigation is continuing.
What this means for Saskatchewan communities
For residents, these updates matter in a practical way: RCMP alerts about wanted suspects are often tied to safety concerns, and both cases involved allegations of violence or weapons. The Carnduff arrest resolves a weeks-long request for public help in the southeast, while the Highway 155 stop shows how tips and inter-detachment coordination can quickly turn into an arrest and a seizure when police believe weapons may be involved.
