Why some reports were counted once

chch.com (1) and Hamilton Police Service — the same report, published near-identically, counted once.

When several outlets publish the identical article — often because they ran the same wire-service story — we count it as one source, not several, so the count reflects independent reporting rather than how widely one story was republished.

Allegations described here are not proven in court unless stated.

Hamilton police have charged a 15-year-old boy following an incident involving a BB gun at St. Charles Learning Centre, according to CHCH News.

The reported incident prompted a police response and temporary safety measures at the East 5th Street learning centre and at a nearby elementary school, before those measures were lifted.

Police Response at Learning Centre

According to CHCH News, police responded Tuesday at about 10:53 a.m. after receiving reports that a student had been shot with a BB gun at St. Charles Learning Centre on East 5th Street.

CHCH News reported that a 14-year-old male student was injured in the face and taken to hospital for treatment.

The incident led to an immediate safety response at the schools. St. Charles Learning Centre was placed in lockdown, while nearby Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Elementary School was put under a hold and secure as a precaution.

Those measures were later lifted.

Teen Charged After Investigation

According to CHCH News, officers said the suspect had left the area before police arrived.

Police subsequently charged a 15-year-old boy with assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, CHCH News reported.

The charges follow an incident involving young people at a learning centre, where the response also extended to a neighbouring school as officials took precautionary steps to protect students and staff.

BB Gun Not Recovered

The BB gun involved has not been recovered, according to CHCH News.

The case centres on the reported injury to the 14-year-old student, the temporary lockdown at St. Charles Learning Centre and the hold-and-secure order at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Elementary School.

For families and staff at both schools, the lifting of those safety measures marked the end of the immediate emergency response. Police have nevertheless laid serious weapon-related and assault charges in connection with the reported BB gun incident.
