Two people, including a youth, are in custody after an alleged assault with a weapon near Beacon Hill Park in Victoria late Friday night that left three people injured, according to Victoria police.
Officers were called to the area just after 10 p.m. after reports of a confrontation involving multiple people. Police say the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, and two of the three injured were taken to hospital and later released.
Victoria assault near Beacon Hill Park
Victoria Police Department (VicPD) says the incident happened near Dallas Road by Beacon Hill Park, one of the city’s busiest waterfront areas, especially on summer evenings.
In statements released through several outlets, police described the call as a “confrontation involving multiple people” and say it escalated into an assault with a weapon. VicPD has not said what type of weapon was involved.
Three injured, two taken to hospital
Police say three people were hurt. Two of them were transported to a local hospital for treatment and have since been released. The third person’s injuries were also described as non-life-threatening.
VicPD has not provided details on the extent of the injuries or whether the injured people knew each other, and police have not said if the injuries were caused directly by the weapon, by a fight, or by some combination of factors.
Two suspects arrested, one is youth
Officers arrested two people at the scene, and police stress neither of the arrested individuals was among those injured. One of the suspects is a youth, which police clarified as 17 or younger.
Both suspects remain in custody, according to VicPD. Police have not released names or laid out any specific charges publicly in the information provided so far.
VicPD Major Crime Unit leads investigation
The investigation is now being handled by VicPD’s Major Crime Unit. Police describe the case as being in the early stages, which usually means investigators are still working to pin down what triggered the confrontation, who was involved, and what role each person may have played.
No additional information has been provided yet on possible motives, whether more arrests are expected, or whether the incident was targeted or random.
Witnesses asked to contact E-Comm line
Police are asking anyone with information who has not yet spoken to investigators to contact the E-Comm non-emergency line at 250-995-7654 ext. 1 and reference file number 26-27379.
For Victorians and anyone visiting the area, the main practical takeaway right now is that police are still collecting witness accounts from a popular public spot, on a night when plenty of people could have been nearby.
