A 78-year-old woman from North York has died after a three-vehicle crash on Highway 401 in Mississauga on Saturday night, according to Ontario Provincial Police. The collision shut down the eastbound collector lanes near Mississauga Road for hours, backing up one of the GTA’s busiest corridors.
Police say the woman was a passenger in one of the vehicles. She was taken to a trauma centre but later died. The driver of that vehicle was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Highway 401 crash in Mississauga: what happened
OPP say officers were called to the scene around 8:15 p.m. Saturday for a three-vehicle collision in the eastbound collector lanes of Highway 401 near Mississauga Road. Another report places the timing as “just after 8 p.m.,” but the location and overall timeline match across accounts.
Police have not released the victim’s name.
Victim identified as North York resident
In a Sunday update, OPP confirmed the person who died was a 78-year-old woman who lived in North York. She was described as the passenger of one of the vehicles involved.
One source reports she was “one of two females taken to the hospital,” while OPP’s statements focus on the deceased passenger and the driver who had minor injuries. Across the reporting, police have said no other injuries have been reported beyond the woman who died and the driver who was hospitalized.
Injuries reported and hospital updates
OPP say the 78-year-old passenger was transported to a trauma centre, where she was pronounced dead. The driver of her vehicle was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Police have not indicated that anyone in the other two vehicles needed hospital care. They also have not provided details about the other drivers, passengers, or vehicles involved.
Eastbound collector lanes closed for investigation
The crash forced a lengthy closure of the eastbound collector lanes at Mississauga Road while officers investigated on scene. Multiple reports say the lanes reopened around 4 a.m. Sunday, meaning the shutdown lasted several hours, with one outlet estimating it at close to eight hours.
OPP said road closures were lifted Sunday morning after the on-scene investigation wrapped up. They also noted support from the OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement team during the closure.
OPP investigation and call for dashcam footage
Police say the cause of the collision is still under investigation. If you were in the area around the time of the crash and have dashcam video or witnessed what happened, OPP are asking you to contact them or Crime Stoppers with information.
