A kayaking outing on Okanagan Lake ended in tragedy Friday night after sudden wind gusts flipped two paddlers into the water near West Kelowna.

West Kelowna RCMP say one of the kayakers, a U.S. citizen, drowned after going under and not resurfacing. The other kayaker was found alive a short time later.

Fatal kayaking incident on Okanagan Lake

Police say they got the call shortly after 7 p.m. on June 19, with reported times ranging from about 7:13 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., depending on the account. The location was near Westbank First Nation Beach, off the 2100 block of Boucherie Road in West Kelowna.

According to RCMP, the two kayakers capsized after running into sudden wind conditions on the lake. Both tried to swim to shore, but one kayaker went under water and did not come back up.

RCMP say neither person was wearing a life jacket or personal flotation device at the time.

West Kelowna RCMP and rescue response

RCMP describe a fast-moving search that started with officers boarding a nearby civilian vessel to begin looking on the water right away. West Kelowna RCMP also deployed their detachment boat, and Peachland Fire Rescue launched a vessel to help.

Police say the second kayaker was located quickly. The search then widened for the missing paddler, with Central Okanagan Search and Rescue joining the effort. After several hours, searchers found and recovered the missing kayaker.

RCMP said the person was pronounced dead at the scene, despite attempts to help.

Victim identified as U.S. citizen

Police have identified the deceased as a United States citizen, but their name has not been released publicly.

RCMP also say they are still working to notify the person’s next of kin. In at least one report, police said Victim Services attended to support those affected at the scene.

BC Coroners Service investigates drowning

The B.C. Coroners Service has been notified and is conducting a parallel investigation into the circumstances of the death, alongside the RCMP investigation.

Life jacket reminder for BC boaters

West Kelowna RCMP Const. Ash Puri called the death “a tragic reminder of how quickly conditions can change on Okanagan Lake,” urging paddlers and boaters to wear a life jacket every time they’re on the water.

Some coverage also points to Transport Canada rules requiring a lifejacket or personal flotation device for each person on board a watercraft, including human-powered ones. RCMP, for their part, emphasized that wearing a flotation device significantly improves your odds in an emergency, especially when conditions shift as quickly as they can on a big lake like Okanagan.
