A man walking his dog on Eighth Avenue North in North Battleford was confronted by a truck carrying multiple occupants who uttered threats and fired a gun, killing the dog, police say.

The report of gunfire came in around 8 p.m., setting off a police response that soon led officers from the street where the dog died to a residence on 110 Street, where arrests and a firearms seizure followed.

Dog killed during walk

According to police, the man was walking his dog when the truck approached. The occupants uttered threats and discharged a firearm, killing the animal.

“The occupants uttered threats and discharged a firearm, injuring the dog,” the Saskatchewan RCMP said in a statement cited in the reporting. “The dog was declared deceased at the scene. The male did not report physical injuries to police.”

Police said the man did not report any physical injuries.

The alleged attack has drawn attention because of its stark circumstances: a person out walking a dog, a vehicle with several people inside, threats, gunfire and an animal killed at the scene.

Suspect truck found nearby

Police found the suspect truck shortly afterward parked outside a residence on 110 Street in North Battleford.

Three men were arrested without incident after leaving the residence. A woman was also arrested after fleeing on foot, police said.

Officers then searched the residence and seized two firearms. Police said the search followed the arrests at the 110 Street address.

One of the men initially taken into custody was later released without charges.

Three people charged

Three people now face charges in connection with the incident: Dennis Kennedy, 37, and Allan Desmeules, 53, both of North Battleford, and Tashina Whitstone, 39, of Red Pheasant Cree Nation.

Kennedy faces 11 charges. They include injuring or endangering animals, careless use of a firearm and possession of a firearm with a tampered serial number.

Desmeules faces five charges, including unsafe storage of firearms and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

Whitstone faces charges of uttering threats to animals and resisting or obstructing a peace officer.

Police have not reported physical injuries to the man who had been walking the dog.

Court dates ahead

Kennedy appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on June 29.

Desmeules and Whitstone are scheduled to appear in North Battleford Provincial Court on Aug. 17.

The case now moves through court after a police response that began with a gunfire call on Eighth Avenue North and ended with three people charged, two firearms seized and a dog dead at the scene.
