Jordan Sangwin, 46, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his parents, Carol Sangwin and Garwood Sangwin, after a search that drew public tips across Peel Region and Toronto.

Police located Sangwin on Saturday after receiving information from the public. He was found in a makeshift shelter in the Mimico Creek area of Toronto, then arrested by Toronto police and transferred to Peel Regional Police.

A search ends in Toronto

The arrest ended a roughly 10-day search that began after Carol and Garwood Sangwin were found with fatal injuries at a Mississauga home on June 18.

Before Sangwin’s arrest, police had issued a Canada-wide warrant. Over the course of the search, police received about 25 tips about possible sightings in Peel Region and Toronto.

Peel police Insp. Mike Mavity thanked members of the public for helping investigators as the search moved through communities in both regions.

“You’ll often hear us say that our community is our greatest asset,” Mavity said.

That public assistance ultimately became central to the arrest. Police located Sangwin on Saturday after receiving information from the public, and he was found in the Mimico Creek area in a makeshift shelter.

Parents identified as victims

The victims have been identified as Carol Sangwin and Garwood Sangwin.

They were found with fatal injuries at a Mississauga home on June 18. Police have said the fatal injuries were not caused by a firearm.

Sangwin now faces two counts of first-degree murder in connection with their deaths.

The case has moved from a public search for a wanted man to a criminal prosecution, but the known facts remain stark: two parents are dead, their son is charged, and police say the search for him ended only after information came in from the public.

For nearly 10 days, police pursued reports of possible sightings across Peel Region and Toronto. The search prompted public appeals and a Canada-wide warrant before Sangwin was located.

Mavity thanked people who came forward during that period, saying the community’s role mattered. Police said they received about 25 tips related to possible sightings before Sangwin was found.

Toronto police made the arrest, then transferred Sangwin to Peel Regional Police.

The handoff closed the search phase of the case. For investigators, it also marked the point where the focus shifted from finding Sangwin to proceeding with the murder charges now before him.

Police offer condolences

Mavity also addressed those grieving Carol and Garwood Sangwin.

“We’re truly sorry for your loss and we’re here to support you through the next process,” he said.

The statement captured the human weight behind the police timeline: a Mississauga home, two fatal injuries, a roughly 10-day search, and a public tip that led officers to a makeshift shelter in Toronto’s Mimico Creek area.

Sangwin has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
