Hamilton police are investigating after a 48-year-old man died in a workplace incident at a waste transfer facility in the city’s industrial area.

Emergency crews were called to the site on Strathearne Avenue at about 4:20 p.m. Monday after reports a worker had been struck by heavy equipment. Police say the man was found with critical injuries, taken to hospital, and later died.

Hamilton workplace fatality on Strathearne Avenue

Police describe the location as a waste transfer facility in Hamilton’s industrial sector. In a news release, they said the incident involved both a commercial vehicle and heavy equipment operating at the site.

Beyond that, details are limited. Police say the investigation is ongoing and they won’t be releasing further information at this time.

Heavy equipment incident leaves worker dead

According to Hamilton Police, life-saving measures were started immediately at the scene before the man was transported to hospital. Despite those efforts, he was later pronounced dead.

Police have not released the man’s name, and there’s been no public information so far about what work was underway at the time, or exactly how the worker came to be struck.

Ontario Ministry of Labour and coroner involved

Police say Ontario’s Ministry of Labour has been notified and is assisting with the investigation. The Office of the Chief Coroner is also involved, and a post-mortem examination has been ordered.

That combination is typical in fatal workplace incidents: police investigate the circumstances, while the province’s labour authorities look at workplace safety issues, and the coroner’s office works to determine cause of death.

What Hamilton police are asking for now

Hamilton Police are asking anyone with information that could help investigators to contact the Hamilton Police Service, Division 20 Criminal Investigation Branch, at 905-546-2918.

For now, that’s where things stand: a fatal incident, an active investigation, and multiple agencies involved as they work out what happened at the Strathearne Avenue facility.
