Joseph Madamesila, who was enjoying the Spruce Meadows Christmas Market with his family, managed to record the spectacle on his iPhone. "We just happened to be in the right place at the right time," he said, describing the experience as "really cool." His video quickly went viral, sparking curiosity and debate among viewers.
Anita Den Hertog, located eight kilometres east of Drumheller, also witnessed the fireball. She described it as moving quickly and making noise, adding another layer of intrigue to the event. Reports of the sighting flooded in from various parts of the province, including Wainwright, Edmonton, Lacombe, Red Deer, Airdrie, Okotoks, Lethbridge, and Pincher Creek. Even a University of Calgary Space Remote Sensing Lab aurora camera in Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan, captured the event, further confirming its widespread visibility.

Experts Weigh In on the Fireball's Origin
As the video circulated, speculation about the fireball's origin ran rampant. Was it a meteor, space debris, or something else entirely? Jeroen Stil, an associate professor in the department of physics and astronomy at the University of Calgary, offered a plausible explanation. He suggested that the fireball was likely a piece of a rocket launched from New Zealand on November 5. "With the commercialization of space, we see more strange features in the sky related to launches," Stil explained. The rocket piece was expected to re-enter the atmosphere on December 1, making this sighting a controlled and anticipated event.
While the fireball's exact nature remains under review, Stil reassured those who missed it that the upcoming Geminid meteor shower on December 13 would offer another chance to witness celestial wonders.
