A woman whose body was found at the DL Bins waste disposal facility in Central Saanich on Tuesday morning, Oct. 13, has been identified, police say.

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit is investigating the death with assistance from Central Saanich Police. Police said efforts are underway to notify the woman’s next of kin, and have not released further details about her identity or the circumstances of her death.

Major Crime Unit Investigating

Central Saanich Police initially responded to a report of a deceased person at the facility. The investigation was then taken over by the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit, known as VIIMCU.

The identification effort echoes other recent missing-person investigations in British Columbia, including The Canada Report’s coverage of Vancouver police using forensic pollen to trace an unidentified woman’s final days. That kind of forensic work can be crucial when investigators are trying to establish who a deceased person was and how they came to be there.

In a Wednesday update, Central Saanich Police said the woman had been identified and thanked members of the public who responded to the earlier appeal for help.

“Investigators thank the public for their attention and response to this matter,” police said.

Police have said the investigation remains ongoing. Any further details, they said, “will be released when appropriate.”

Earlier Appeal Sought Identification

Before the woman was identified, investigators asked the public for assistance in determining who she was.

Police described her as possibly in her 30s, about five-foot-nine and heavy-set, with brown hair with blonde highlights. They also noted a horizontal scar on the inside of her right forearm.

The description was accompanied by a request for anyone with information about the woman’s identity to contact the VIIMCU information line at 250-380-6211.

The appeal brought a quick public response, according to the police update issued after the identification was made.

Facility Reopened Wednesday

The discovery drew police and major-crime investigators to the Central Saanich disposal facility on Tuesday morning.

Europe Says reported that DL Bins temporarily closed its gates Tuesday before reopening Wednesday. In a message cited in the reporting, the facility thanked people for their “patience and understanding” and said its thoughts were with family members of people who go missing throughout Vancouver Island.

Police have not publicly provided a cause of death or other details about what led to the investigation.

Next-Of-Kin Notification Underway

For now, the focus remains on notifying the woman’s family while investigators continue their work.

The Central Saanich Police update made clear that the identification does not mark the end of the investigation. VIIMCU remains responsible for examining the death, with local police continuing to assist.

Authorities have asked the public to await further information as it becomes appropriate to release.
