Why some reports were counted once
Europe Says and CTV News — the same report, published near-identically, counted once.
When several outlets publish the identical article — often because they ran the same wire-service story — we count it as one source, not several, so the count reflects independent reporting rather than how widely one story was republished.

A police welfare check in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside escalated into a high-speed pursuit through downtown, ending near Waterfront Station with the arrest of a 44-year-old Alberta man.
Vancouver police said officers had spotted a visibly distraught female passenger in a parked BMW with Alberta licence plates near East Hastings Street and Dunlevy Avenue. The woman’s condition prompted officers to approach the vehicle for a welfare check.
Welfare Check Prompts Police Response
Police said officers activated their emergency lights and sirens because they were concerned for the passenger’s safety and well-being.
“Concerned for her safety and well-being, officers activated their emergency lights and sirens to conduct a welfare check,” the Vancouver Police Department said in a release. “The vehicle immediately sped away.”
The BMW’s departure prompted police to authorize a pursuit because of what they described as a perceived threat to the passenger. Daily Hive reported the VPD initiated a Code 3 pursuit, a priority response involving lights and sirens.
The incident began with a concern for the woman in the front seat, according to police, and quickly became a broader public-safety emergency as the vehicle moved into downtown Vancouver.
High-Speed Drive Through Downtown
Multiple police cruisers pursued the BMW into downtown, police said. During the pursuit, the vehicle drove at high speeds, weaved into oncoming traffic and showed what police called “a complete disregard for public safety.”
The wording in the police account reflects the seriousness with which officers viewed both the passenger’s situation and the risks posed during the pursuit.
Police did not report injuries during the incident. “Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident,” the VPD said.
Arrest Near Waterfront Station
The pursuit ended near Waterfront Station, where officers used a vehicle interdiction tactic to stop the BMW and carried out what police described as a high-risk takedown.
A 44-year-old Alberta man was arrested. Police said he could face possible charges of forcible confinement, drug possession and dangerous driving.
The potential charges remain framed by police as possible, while investigators continue examining the circumstances that led officers to initiate the welfare check and the events that followed.
Passenger Cooperating With Investigators
Police said the female passenger is cooperating with investigators. The VPD has also said its investigation remains ongoing.
For now, the police account places the initial focus on officers’ concern for the passenger they saw in the parked BMW near East Hastings Street and Dunlevy Avenue, followed by a pursuit that crossed into downtown and concluded near Waterfront Station without reported injuries.
