In a world where nature often takes a backseat to development, Robin Hanson is bucking the trend with his newly opened Hanson Nature Preserve. Nestled near French Lake in Rusagonis, New Brunswick, this 400-acre sanctuary is more than just a patch of green; it's a testament to one man's lifelong commitment to conservation and community.
The story of the Hanson Nature Preserve begins over half a century ago, when a teenage Robin Hanson found himself in the middle of a family land dispute. The land, which had been put up for a tax sale, was caught in a tug-of-war between his two uncles. Sensing an opportunity, the young Hanson offered to pay the taxes and take ownership of the land himself. His uncles agreed, and thus began Hanson's journey from landowner to conservationist.
Initially, Hanson's father, a lumberman, assumed his son would follow in his footsteps, harvesting the valuable hardwood and pine trees to pay off the land. But Hanson had other plans. "I just really enjoy this part of nature and I'm not going to do that," he recalls telling his father. Instead, he chose to preserve the land, allowing its natural beauty to flourish.
Fast forward to today, and the Hanson Nature Preserve is a vibrant ecosystem teeming with life. One of its crown jewels is a 260-year-old pine tree, a silent witness to centuries of history. Visitors can also enjoy a large pond, complete with a 10-metre-high watchtower perfect for birdwatching. "Right now the leaves are changing and it is a photographer's dream," Hanson notes, highlighting the preserve's allure during the fall season.
The preserve is already attracting families and nature enthusiasts, drawn by the promise of tranquility and the chance to spot a variety of wildlife. "It's a hot spot for bird watchers," says Hanson, who has seen hundreds of ducks and even blue herons gracing the skies above the preserve. For him, seeing people enjoy the land is a dream come true.
Hanson's vision extends beyond his own lifetime. His daughter Tanya shares his passion for preservation, ensuring that the land remains untouched for future generations. "Our family is committed to have this preserved forever and a day," Hanson affirms, underscoring the family's dedication to conservation.
