Prince Edward Island is stepping into the digital age with the launch of MyPEI, a new online platform designed to streamline access to government services for residents. This initiative is part of the province's broader effort to modernize service delivery and enhance the convenience of accessing personal health information.

MyPEI Platform Launches with MyHealthPEI

Currently, MyPEI offers access to MyHealthPEI, a service that allows Islanders to view their health information online. This includes immunization records, lab results from mid-May 2025 onward, and diagnostic imaging reports from mid-July 2025 onward. The platform also features self-entry tools for tracking personal health data, such as insulin levels and blood pressure, and can integrate data from smart devices like Fitbits.

The provincial government invested $15.2 million in developing MyPEI, with $11 million funded by the federal government. Adam Peters, manager of digital trust with the Department of Finance, emphasized that the platform is just getting started. Over the next 12 to 24 months, additional services will be rolled out as the government collaborates with various departments to expand the platform's offerings.

Enhancing Health Management for Islanders

MyHealthPEI is not just about convenience; it's about empowering Islanders to take charge of their health. Family doctor Kristy Newson, who helped test the app, believes it will be particularly useful for patients visiting walk-in clinics or seeking care outside the province. By having immediate access to their latest lab results and X-ray reports, patients can provide healthcare providers with crucial information, enhancing the quality of care they receive.

The platform also includes a library of educational resources, offering evidence-based information that can help patients better understand their health conditions. This feature aims to prevent the pitfalls of self-diagnosing through unreliable sources online.

Balancing Digital Access with Traditional Methods

While MyHealthPEI represents a significant step forward in digital health technology, it is designed to complement, not replace, traditional healthcare services. Barbara Brookins, president of the P.E.I. Nurses’ Union, highlighted that while these digital tools are beneficial, they are not substitutes for professional medical care.

For those who prefer not to use digital services, the province assures that traditional methods of accessing health information—whether in person or over the phone—remain available. Laurae Kloschinsky, assistant deputy minister with the Department of Health and Wellness, reiterated that MyHealthPEI is an optional service, providing residents with the flexibility to choose how they access their health information.

As Prince Edward Island continues to roll out more services under the MyPEI platform, the focus remains on ensuring that the system is secure and user-friendly. Finance Minister Jill Burridge emphasized the importance of protecting sensitive information with a robust verification system that meets national standards. This commitment to security and privacy is crucial as the province navigates the complexities of digital service delivery.
