A four-year-old child has died after what Peel Regional Police describe as a possible fall from an apartment balcony in Mississauga, near the Square One area.

This tragic incident follows a recent spike in violent crime in the area, including a home invasion that resulted in multiple arrests, as detailed in a previous report on Mississauga police activity.

Police say officers were called to an apartment building near City Centre Drive and Duke of York Boulevard just after 4:30 p.m. on Monday for a medical assist. When they arrived, they found the child on the ground outside the building. The child was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition and later died.

Mississauga balcony fall near Square One

Multiple outlets place the incident in the City Centre neighbourhood, close to Square One shopping centre. Peel police say they received reports the child may have fallen from an apartment balcony, but they have not confirmed the height or exactly how the fall happened.

Peel paramedics said the child was transported to hospital after falling from an unknown height. Police later confirmed the child died in hospital.

What Peel Regional Police have said

Peel Regional Police have kept the public details limited, describing the case as “active and sensitive.” In statements reported by several outlets, police have repeated the same core timeline:

- Call for medical assistance came in just after 4:30 p.m. Monday - Location was near City Centre Drive and Duke of York Boulevard - A child was found on the ground outside the building - Reports suggested a possible fall from a balcony - The child was taken to hospital and later died

Police have also said they cannot release further details right now because the investigation is ongoing.

What’s still unknown in the investigation

Right now, there are big gaps in what’s been made public. Police have not said:

- Which floor or what height the child may have fallen from - Whether anyone else was in the unit at the time - Whether the fall is being treated as accidental or if other factors are being examined - Whether any building safety issues are part of the investigation

That lack of detail may be frustrating for the public, but it’s common in cases involving a child, especially early in an investigation.

Call for witnesses in Mississauga case

Peel police are asking anyone with information to come forward. No suspect information has been mentioned, and police have not indicated there is any risk to the broader public. For now, the focus appears to be on piecing together what happened leading up to the fall, using witness accounts and whatever evidence can be gathered from the building and surrounding area.

The next update will likely depend on what investigators confirm about how the child ended up outside the building, and whether the circumstances point to a tragic accident or something else.
