Chlorine Exposure Suspected at Canmore Hotel Pool

A weekend swim at the Canmore Inn and Suites turned alarming when 11 children were hospitalized after falling ill in the hotel's pool area. Emergency Health Services (EHS) responded to a hazmat call on Sunday morning, suspecting chemical exposure as the cause. Firefighters arriving at the scene found approximately 30 children exhibiting symptoms such as vomiting and coughing. Initial air tests indicated elevated levels of a hazardous substance, believed to be chlorine.

Emergency Response and Hospitalization

EHS reported that nine children were assessed on-site and taken to Canmore General Hospital by their parents, while one child required ambulance transport. In total, 11 children received medical attention, with ten in stable, non-life-threatening condition. However, one child was transferred to Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary in serious but stable condition. The swift response by paramedics, firefighters, and hospital staff was commended by Premier Danielle Smith, who expressed her concern for the affected families.

Hotel and Town's Actions

The Canmore Inn and Suites, located about 100 kilometres west of Calgary, has been addressing online rumours about the incident. In a statement, the hotel clarified that there is no evidence supporting claims of cyanide presence, emphasizing that their pool systems are managed by a licensed chemical company. The hotel has pledged full cooperation with authorities and continues to investigate the incident. Meanwhile, Canmore Fire-Rescue isolated the issue to the pool and a mechanical room, ventilating the area to ensure safety.

Community Impact and Reactions

The incident has left parents and the local community seeking answers. Many of the children were in Canmore for a U-7 hockey tournament, adding to the distress among visiting families. Jennifer Stevenson, a parent whose son was affected, described the situation as terrifying, noting that her son and other children experienced coughing and chest pain. The Canmore Eagles Minor Hockey Association expressed gratitude to emergency responders for their prompt action.

Ongoing Investigation and Safety Measures

As the investigation continues, the Town of Canmore and the hotel have assured the public that there is no ongoing risk. An independent contractor confirmed no immediate danger following ventilation efforts. The hotel has committed to sharing further information once health authorities complete their assessments. Meanwhile, the community remains focused on the recovery of the children and ensuring such incidents are prevented in the future.
