Richard Mantha, 62, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after being convicted of six offences involving the sexual assault of three vulnerable women near Calgary, including drugging one victim.
He was also found guilty of uttering threats against a fourth woman. Court heard that most of the victims worked in the sex trade.
Judge cites callous conduct
Provincial court Justice Judith J. Shriar described Mantha’s conduct toward one victim as a significant aggravating factor in the case.
Shriar said Mantha laughed as Aimee Ert fled partially clothed and fearing for her life. The judge called his response evidence of “callous indifference” to Ert’s condition and a high degree of moral culpability.
Ert’s victim impact statement was among the most moving Shriar said she had heard.
The sentence fell within the range sought by the Crown, which asked for 10 to 13 years in prison. Defence counsel had argued for a sentence between five and seven years.
Ert speaks after publication ban lifted
Ert successfully asked to have a publication ban on her name lifted. At sentencing, she said she forgives Mantha and hopes he receives help.
“I also am forgiving myself for allowing him to hurt me,” Ert said. “However, I will never forget what he did to me. I have struggled on a daily basis to get through everything that I have experienced in the past.”
Outside court, Ert said the sentence brought a measure of closure.
“Anybody that can actively harm someone in the ways that he did will get what they deserve,” she said. “He’s a very little man, and I can’t even say a man.”
Prosecutor Dominique Mathurin thanked the victims for coming forward through a lengthy court process.
“The road to today has been long,” Mathurin said. “We are so grateful to each of the victims for coming forward and giving their testimony, which takes immense bravery and without whom a conviction would not have been possible.”
Incidents at several locations
According to Head Topics, court heard that the assaults involved a rural property east of Calgary, as well as incidents at a Calgary hotel and a local residence.
The case moved slowly through the courts after the trial began in January 2024. It faced lengthy delays after Mantha fired previous lawyers and suffered a stroke.
Time served reduces remaining term
Mantha received credit of five years and three months for time already served in custody. That leaves him with six years, eight months and 28 days remaining on his sentence.
