RCMP are seeking information after reports that two kittens were thrown from a moving SUV on Route 24 in Lyndale, P.E.I., on Sept. 20.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. in Kings County, near Charlottetown. One kitten was struck by another vehicle and died. The other was recovered and has since been adopted.
Investigation seeks SUV identification
Witnesses described the vehicle as a red SUV with a grey roof rack. RCMP are asking the public for information that could help identify the driver or others involved.
Cpl. Gavin Moore, a media relations officer with the P.E.I. RCMP, called the reported incident “disturbing and shocking.”
“Animals are vulnerable and depend on people for their care and protection,” Moore said. “Deliberately harming animals in this manner is unacceptable.”
Moore also told CBC that an act of this nature is particularly troubling because it unfolded publicly, where other people had to witness it.
A busy day on Route 24
According to CBC News, the incident took place during the 70-Mile Coastal Yard Sale, an annual event that brings vendors to roadsides across southeastern Prince Edward Island.
The reported events on Route 24 have prompted the RCMP to appeal directly to people who were in the area that morning, including motorists whose vehicles may have recorded footage.
Police want to hear from anyone who witnessed what happened or has dashcam footage from Route 24 in Lyndale between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Sept. 20.
Public asked to come forward
The surviving kitten’s recovery and adoption provide a small measure of relief in an investigation centred on the death of the other animal.
