Neil Young, the iconic Canadian singer-songwriter whose music has been the soundtrack to countless lives, is about to hit a major milestone—his 80th birthday. And what better way to celebrate than with a star-studded tribute at Toronto’s legendary Massey Hall? On November 12, a who's who of Canadian music will gather for NY80: A Celebration of Neil Young and His Music, a concert that promises to be as unforgettable as Young's own storied career.

The lineup is a veritable feast for music lovers, featuring heavyweights like Dallas Green of City and Colour, Jim Cuddy from Blue Rodeo, and Kathleen Edwards. Also joining the celebration are Serena Ryder, Joel Plaskett, Matt Mays, Donovan Woods, Julian Taylor, and Sarah Harmer, among others. The event will be hosted by CBC’s Tom Power, adding a touch of familiar Canadian charm to the proceedings.

But this isn't just a birthday bash. The concert is also a fundraiser for MusiCounts, a Canadian charity dedicated to supporting music education in schools. Kristy Fletcher, President of MusiCounts, expressed her excitement about the event, noting, "Neil Young is nothing short of a legend in Canada and beyond. MusiCounts is honoured to recognize his legacy through NY80, and will be investing the proceeds in school music programs across the country."

The event has been a long time coming, according to Dale Gago of Howl Entertainment, who is organizing the tribute. "I've wanted to stage this event for a number of years, so am excited it's finally happening," Gago said. "Neil Young is one of our greatest artists, and I'm grateful all of these amazing musicians are going to take the stage together to celebrate him on his 80th birthday. And what better setting than Massey Hall."

Massey Hall holds a special place in Young's heart—and in the hearts of his fans. His 1971 album, Live at Massey Hall, is a beloved classic, capturing the raw energy and emotion that have become Young's trademarks. It's fitting, then, that this tribute should take place in a venue so closely associated with his legacy.

The evening will feature an 11-piece house band directed by musician and producer Aaron Goldstein, who has curated a setlist spanning Young's expansive career. Expect to hear everything from Buffalo Springfield hits to Crazy Horse classics, all performed by some of the most talented musicians Canada has to offer. The band includes Glenn Milchem of Blue Rodeo, Shamus Currie from the Sheepdogs, and indie guitar legend Ian Blurton, ensuring that the music will be as dynamic and diverse as Young's own discography.

While Young himself has been invited to the celebration, it's anyone's guess whether he’ll make an appearance. But even if he doesn't, the night promises to be a fitting tribute to a man whose music has shaped the landscape of rock and roll. Born in Toronto in 1945, Young's career has spanned more than six decades, with albums like After the Gold Rush and Harvest leaving an indelible mark on the music world.

Tickets for the event go on sale this Friday, September 19, at 10 a.m. through Massey Hall. Whether you're a die-hard fan or a casual listener, this is one celebration you won't want to miss. After all, how often do you get the chance to celebrate a living legend in the company of Canada's finest musicians?
