Five adults were taken to hospital after a late-night stabbing at a North York home, and Toronto police have arrested a man in his 50s.
Police say they were called to the area of Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue West around 9:44 p.m. Monday for reports of “unknown trouble” at a residence. When officers arrived, they found multiple injured people. A large police presence remained in the area as investigators worked through the scene.
North York stabbing sends five adults to hospital
Toronto Paramedic Services said five people were transported to hospital. Across the reports, three adults are consistently described as having been stabbed and suffering critical or life-threatening injuries.
Where the numbers vary is in how many victims police formally counted at first versus how many paramedics transported. Toronto police said four victims were located and taken to hospital with “various levels of injury,” while paramedics reported transporting five adults total, including one person taken in for assessment.
Conflicting reports on injury severity
There are also slightly different early accounts of how serious the injuries were.
Paramedics told CP24 that three people were transported in life-threatening condition, one with minor injuries, and a fifth adult was taken to hospital to be assessed. Another report said three had critical injuries and two had minor injuries.
Toronto police provided an update Tuesday morning saying two adults remained in critical condition. Another account said two adults had life-threatening injuries and were in critical condition, while two others had non-life-threatening injuries.
The consistent takeaway: several people were badly hurt, and as of Tuesday morning, two were still in critical condition.
Arrest made, suspect and victims knew each other
Police say one person was taken into custody at the scene, and later reports describe the suspect as a man in his 50s who has been arrested.
Investigators have also said the suspect and victims are known to each other. Police could not confirm the nature of the relationship or whether everyone involved lived at the address.
Location details: Bathurst and Steeles area
Police initially described the call as coming from the Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue West area. One report identified the residence as being on Plum Tree Way, described as near Bathurst Street and Finch Avenue West.
Either way, it’s the same general pocket of northwest Toronto, and police warned residents to expect a heavy presence in the neighbourhood while the investigation continues.
What happens next in the Toronto police investigation
Toronto police say the investigation is ongoing. They’ve asked anyone with information to contact police or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
For people living nearby, the practical impact is mostly short-term: more cruisers, more officers, and a lot of questions being asked as police piece together what happened inside the home and why.
