A Quebec woman is facing a sentencing hearing today in Longueuil after pleading guilty to aggravated assault. Stéphanie Borel, 47, admitted to throwing boiling water on a 10-year-old boy last year, an act she confessed was driven by frustration over a persistent prank.

The incident occurred on October 2, 2024, when the boy, whose identity is protected by a publication ban, was walking home from school with friends. They took a shortcut past Borel's residence on Montreal's South Shore. Known for its mischievous nature, the "ding dong ditch" prank had been a frequent annoyance for Borel, who lived near the boy's elementary school.

According to an agreed statement of facts, Borel opened her door before the boy could ring the bell and threw a container of boiling water at him, causing second-degree burns to about four per cent of his body, including his face, chest, and shoulder blade. The boy's father recounted his son arriving home in distress, screaming about the burns.

Court to Hear Sentencing Arguments

The sentencing hearing at the Longueuil courthouse will see the Crown prosecutor arguing for jail time. The Crown and defence have already agreed on a statement of facts, which clarifies that there was no racial motivation behind Borel's actions. The boy, who is Black, and Borel, who is white, did not know each other prior to the incident.

The courtroom is expected to be tense as both sides present their arguments. The Crown is likely to emphasize the severity of the injuries and the need for a sentence that reflects the gravity of the offence. Meanwhile, Borel's defence may argue for leniency, possibly citing her frustration and lack of intent to cause such harm.

Community Reaction and Implications

The case has drawn significant attention in the community, highlighting the potential dangers of seemingly harmless pranks and the extreme reactions they can provoke. It also raises questions about how communities can better address conflicts between residents and local youth.

As the court proceedings unfold, the outcome will be closely watched, not only for its implications for Borel but also for how it might influence similar cases in the future. The sentencing will serve as a reminder of the serious consequences that can arise from actions taken in the heat of the moment.
