A 52-year-old man is dead after a two-vehicle crash Tuesday night near Highway 403 in Hamilton’s Ancaster area. Two women were also taken to hospital, with police later saying both are expected to recover.

Hamilton Police Service says it’s still too early to say what caused the collision, and investigators are asking witnesses and drivers with dashcam footage to come forward.

Hamilton crash near Highway 403 ramp

Hamilton police say the collision happened just after 7:30 p.m. on Wilson Street at the Highway 403 eastbound exit ramp. Other reporting describes the location as Wilson Street just west of Highway 403, in Ancaster.

Ontario Provincial Police also blocked Highway 403 off-ramps leading to Wilson Street while the investigation was underway.

What police say happened on Wilson Street

In a Wednesday morning release, Hamilton police said a 2025 Jeep Compass, driven by a 29-year-old woman, was travelling westbound on Wilson Street.

Police say a 2022 Acura MDX, driven by a 52-year-old man, had exited Highway 403 and was attempting to turn left onto Wilson Street when the two vehicles collided. A 43-year-old woman was in the front passenger seat of the Acura, police said.

Injuries reported differ between updates

There are a few differences in how the aftermath was described, likely reflecting early information versus a later, more detailed update.

Some reports, citing police, said one person was pronounced dead at the scene and that two others were taken to hospital, with one in critical condition and the other in stable condition.

Hamilton police’s later release says all three occupants were transported to hospital, where the 52-year-old man was pronounced dead. Police say the 43-year-old passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while the 29-year-old Jeep driver was treated and is in stable condition.

Police rule out no factors yet

Hamilton police say there is no information at this time to confirm whether speed, weather, or impairment were factors in the crash. The cause remains unknown, and investigators have not said whether any charges are being considered.

Police also said they will not release the name of the driver who died, citing respect for the family.

Road closures in Ancaster lasted overnight

Wilson Street was shut down for several hours while police examined the scene. One report said it was closed between Shaver Road and Hamilton Drive. Hamilton police later said the road reopened at about 4:15 a.m.

Police say witnesses stayed at the scene and have spoken with investigators, and they’re still asking anyone with more information or dash camera video to contact them.
