A toddler has died after being struck by a vehicle while in a stroller at a marked crosswalk in southwest Calgary. Police say the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating, and investigators do not believe speed or impairment played a role.

The collision happened Sunday at about 4:30 p.m. at Horton Road S.W. and Hull Avenue S.W., near Macleod Trail. Police said the child was in a stroller being pushed by two adults, who were not injured.

Southwest Calgary crosswalk collision details

Calgary police say a westbound Jeep Cherokee turned south into the intersection and hit the stroller in the marked crosswalk. The child was taken to hospital and later died.

One report says police confirmed the child’s death around 6 p.m. Another says the child was pronounced dead in hospital. Either way, the outcome was the same: a family lost a young child in a place where people should be able to cross safely.

Calgary police investigation and driver cooperation

Police say the driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Officers have also said speed and intoxication are not considered factors in the crash.

Acting Insp. Mike Anderson, speaking to reporters late Sunday, called the death an “absolute tragedy,” saying two parents had lost their two-year-old child. He said investigators will look at environmental factors and the state of the crosswalk, and they will speak with witnesses, the driver, and the parents when they’re ready.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Calgary Police Service non-emergency line at 403-266-1234, or to reach out through Crime Stoppers.

Road closures near Macleod Trail Sunday evening

Drivers in the area saw road closures after the collision, with police keeping parts of the intersection closed Sunday evening as investigators worked. One report said roads would be closed for several more hours.

Calgary pedestrian deaths: conflicting counts reported

The reports don’t fully line up on where this death sits in Calgary’s broader pedestrian fatality numbers.

One account says this is Calgary’s second pedestrian fatality of the year, noting the first happened Jan. 28 in Upper Mount Royal, also in southwest Calgary. Another, from The Canadian Press, quotes police saying it was Calgary’s seventh pedestrian death of the year and adds context that in 2025 police reported 15 pedestrian fatalities, described as an 11-year high.

Those different counts may reflect different ways of categorizing deaths (for example, who is included in “pedestrian” reporting, or what time window is being referenced), but police have not explained the discrepancy in the reports provided.

What is consistent across coverage is the core set of facts: a toddler in a stroller was struck in a marked crosswalk at Horton Road S.W. and Hull Avenue S.W.; two accompanying adults were physically unhurt; the driver stayed; and police say impairment and speed are not being treated as causes as the investigation continues.
