Calgary Property Closure Aims to Restore Community Safety
In a decisive move to tackle ongoing criminal activity, Alberta sheriffs have shut down a notorious property in Calgary. Located at 5128 Maryvale Dr. N.E., this residence had become a focal point for drug-related activities and other crimes, prompting the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) unit to step in. The property is now boarded up, fenced off, and will remain closed for 90 days, with a community safety order extending until January 2028. This closure is part of a broader effort to enhance safety in the Marlborough neighbourhood, which has been plagued by issues stemming from this so-called "problem property."
Longstanding Issues Prompt Drastic Measures
The decision to close the property comes after Calgary police were called to the location 45 times between March 2023 and March 2025. Reports of illegal drug trafficking, violence, and property offences had become alarmingly frequent. Acting Inspector Lee Dunbar of the Calgary Police Service highlighted the significant impact on the community's sense of safety, noting that the closure is a crucial step toward restoring peace in the area.
Insp. Brent Pickard from SCAN described the property as a "flop house," with numerous individuals coming and going, sometimes staying for just a few minutes or several days. Despite efforts to collaborate with the property owner over the years, the issues persisted, leading to this final measure. Pickard emphasized that while the owner is not directly responsible for the criminal activities, they were unable to control the situation, making the closure an unfortunate necessity.
SCAN's Ongoing Efforts in Alberta
Since its establishment in 2008, the SCAN unit has been instrumental in addressing similar issues across Alberta. With over 10,000 properties investigated and more than 135 community safety orders issued, SCAN continues to play a vital role in maintaining neighbourhood safety. The closure of the Maryvale Dr. property is a testament to their commitment to tackling crime and ensuring that communities feel secure.
Public Safety Minister Mike Ellis expressed relief at the closure, acknowledging the threat posed by the illegal activities to the neighbourhood. As the investigation continues, the property will remain under close surveillance, with the hope that this action will deter future criminal behaviour and provide much-needed respite for the residents of Marlborough.
