A helicopter pilot is dead after a small aircraft on a flight from Fredericton to Sussex, New Brunswick, crashed and never reached its destination, according to the RCMP and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB).
The helicopter was reported missing Saturday evening, and search crews later found wreckage and the pilot’s body near Sussex airport. Officials have not released the pilot’s name.
Sussex, New Brunswick helicopter crash details
RCMP Sgt. Pierre-Luc Haché said the aircraft was a Robinson R-44 helicopter travelling from Fredericton to the airport in Sussex, about 80 kilometres northeast of Saint John. The helicopter never arrived.
The TSB said the helicopter took off from Fredericton International Airport at about 3 p.m. local time Saturday. It was operating under visual flight rules, meaning the pilot navigated primarily by outside visual reference rather than relying solely on instruments.
Search and rescue timeline near Sussex airport
Just before 7 p.m. Saturday, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax contacted RCMP in Sussex about a missing helicopter with one person on board, Haché said. Search efforts began soon after.
By early Sunday morning, searchers located the wreckage in the area of the helicopter’s last known signal, according to Haché. He said crews found the helicopter’s main cabin and the deceased pilot.
The location is described slightly differently across official statements: Haché said the body and debris were found west-northwest of Sussex airport, while the TSB said the crash occurred near the airport.
Transportation Safety Board investigation underway
The TSB confirmed investigators were en route Sunday to determine what happened. No cause has been given, and authorities have not shared details about weather, mechanical issues, or any emergency communications.
The TSB also said the helicopter was commercially registered, but officials have not provided additional information about the operator or the purpose of the flight.
What we know about the Robinson R-44
The Robinson R-44 is a four-seat helicopter. Information cited from the Robinson Helicopter Company’s website describes it as having a two-bladed rotor system and an overall length of about 11.7 metres.
The same source lists a maximum operating altitude of about 4.3 kilometres.
What comes next for New Brunswick aviation safety
For now, the key questions, why the helicopter went down and exactly where along the route it crashed, sit with the TSB investigation. Officials have also not said when the pilot’s identity will be released.
