Mark Carney's Global Tour: A Look at Upcoming Visits

Prime Minister Mark Carney is on a mission to bolster Canada's international trade and investment ties. Since the start of the year, Carney has been busy travelling to key global destinations, including France, China, Qatar, and Switzerland. His ambitious agenda aims to double non-U.S. exports over the next decade. Here's a rundown of where Carney might be headed next.

India and Australia: Strengthening Indo-Pacific Ties

Carney is expected to visit New Delhi soon, following an invitation to attend an artificial intelligence summit in February. India's High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, confirmed the invitation, and the trip is anticipated to occur in the coming weeks. While in the region, Carney may also visit Australia, a key player in Canada's Indo-Pacific strategy. Although details remain unconfirmed, experts suggest that a visit to Australia could coincide with the India trip. The last Canadian prime minister to visit Australia was in 2014, and Carney's potential visit could signal renewed engagement.

Brazil and the Mercosur Trade Talks

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has invited Carney to discuss trade in April. While Carney's office hasn't confirmed the trip, it aligns with ongoing efforts to negotiate a trade deal with the Mercosur bloc, which includes Brazil. Carney's presence could advance these discussions, although he previously missed the COP summit in Brazil last fall.

G7 in France and NATO in Turkey

Carney is slated to attend the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, from June 15 to 17. The summit was rescheduled to accommodate U.S. President Donald Trump's plans. Following this, Carney will likely head to Ankara, Türkiye, for the NATO summit on July 7 and 8. These meetings come as Canada collaborates with European allies to increase defence spending amidst shifting geopolitical dynamics.

Asia-Pacific Engagement: China, Philippines, and Cambodia

Carney's itinerary includes a return to China for the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation summit in Shenzhen this November. Additionally, the Philippines will host the ASEAN leaders' summit in Pasay City from November 10 to 12, where Canada aims to finalize a trade deal with the ASEAN bloc. Cambodia is set to host the Francophonie summit in Siem Reap from November 14 to 16, though Carney's attendance remains unconfirmed.

Commonwealth Meeting in the Caribbean

Antigua and Barbuda will host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting from November 1 to 4. Carney's participation is anticipated, given the proximity and his affinity for Commonwealth ties. This summit offers an opportunity to reinforce Canada's relationships within the Commonwealth, especially after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau skipped the last meeting in Samoa.

Carney's extensive travel plans underscore Canada's commitment to diversifying trade and strengthening international partnerships. As the year unfolds, these visits will likely play a crucial role in shaping Canada's global economic and diplomatic landscape.
