Why some reports were counted once

Europe Says and CTV News — the same report, published near-identically, counted once.

When several outlets publish the identical article — often because they ran the same wire-service story — we count it as one source, not several, so the count reflects independent reporting rather than how widely one story was republished.

Allegations described here are not proven in court unless stated.

A skunk captured in downtown Vancouver has tested positive for rabies, prompting Vancouver Coastal Health to issue a public health notice for people who may have encountered the animal.

A small number of people bitten by the skunk have been assessed and received rabies vaccinations and rabies immunoglobulin, VCH said, to prevent rabies.

## Who Should Seek Rabies Assessment

The notice applies to people who had contact with a sick or abnormally behaving skunk between Sept. 22 and Oct. 17.

VCH’s advisory covers the West End and the Stanley Park and downtown Vancouver area, including an area bounded by Georgia and Burrard streets.

The health authority is asking anyone who believes they may have been bitten or scratched by the skunk to seek an immediate medical assessment. The notice concerns contact with the animal during the identified period.

“While interactions with skunks are rare, a small number of people bitten by the skunk have been assessed and received rabies vaccinations and immunoglobulin to prevent rabies,” VCH said.

## How Rabies Is Transmitted

Rabies virus is found in the saliva of infected animals, VCH said. It can be transmitted through bites and, less commonly, through scratches.

The health authority also sought to clarify what does not pose a rabies transmission risk in this situation: exposure to a skunk’s spray, urine or feces does not transmit the virus.

“Rabies infections in people are extremely rare in Canada,” VCH said in its notice. “Infections are fatal but can be prevented when rabies vaccines and/or rabies immunoglobulin are administered promptly after an exposure.”

## What To Do After Contact

Anyone who may have been bitten or scratched should wash the wound with soap and warm water for at least 15 minutes, then seek immediate medical assessment, VCH advised.

During business hours, people can contact VCH at 604-675-3900\. Outside business hours, the authority advises people to attend an urgent care centre or emergency department for assessment.

VCH’s notice identifies both bites and scratches as possible routes of exposure, with saliva from an infected animal being the concern.

## Advice For Pet Owners

VCH is also asking pet owners to act promptly if their animal had direct contact with the potentially rabid skunk.

Those owners should contact their veterinarian, the health authority said.

The public notice focuses on a defined area and a defined period, while offering a clear message for anyone who believes they had direct contact with a skunk behaving unusually in downtown Vancouver: clean any wound immediately and get assessed without delay.
