Allegations described here are not proven in court unless stated.

A pickup truck split in half and burst into flames after crashing into a nursing home in East Vancouver early Friday, leaving a 34-year-old driver under arrest and a collision investigation underway.

The crash happened at about 1:30 a.m. near Renfrew Street and East 22nd Avenue. The driver and a passenger were taken to hospital, while no injuries were reported among people inside the building or the witness involved in the collision.

## Pickup veered off Renfrew Street

Police said a grey GMC Sierra was travelling southbound on Renfrew Street when it collided near East 22nd Avenue. The truck then veered off the roadway and crashed into the nursing home.

The collision unfolded in the early morning hours at an East Vancouver intersection, ending with severe damage to the pickup and a fire that greeted responding officers.

“Responding officers located the vehicle wreckage fully engulfed in flames,” the Vancouver Police Department said in a statement.

The truck split in half after the impact and burst into flames, police said.

## No injuries reported inside building

Despite the force of the crash and the fire, no injuries were reported among occupants of the nursing home or the witness, according to police.

The pickup’s driver and passenger were both transported to hospital. Police later arrested the 34-year-old driver.

The reported absence of injuries inside the building stands in contrast to the destruction of the truck, which police seized as part of their continuing investigation.

## Driver faces impaired-driving charges

Police charged the driver with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

He was also served with a 90-day driving prohibition and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

The allegations have not been tested in court. Vancouver police said the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
