Salmon Arm RCMP have issued a public warning about a potent drug supply after officers responded to two suspected overdoses within 24 hours.

**Key facts**

- Police have not yet identified the specific drug involved in the Salmon Arm overdoses.
- RCMP advised people who use illicit drugs to have a buddy and carry naloxone, and to ensure both people know how to use it.
- Interior Health’s drug alert for Kamloops warned that counterfeit tablets sold as Dilaudid contain isotonitazene, not hydromorphone.
- RCMP said isotonitazene is considered up to 50 times stronger than fentanyl and carries a very high risk of overdose.

Police have not identified the specific drug involved. Salmon Arm RCMP media relations officer Andrew Hodges said RCMP “always advise against the use of any illicit substance or drug,” but believe sharing the warning can help prevent further overdoses.

## Kamloops drug alert on counterfeit Dilaudid tablets

Separate from the Salmon Arm warning, Interior Health’s drug alert for Kamloops warned that counterfeit tablets sold as Dilaudid contain isotonitazene, not hydromorphone.

The Kamloops alert echoes concerns raised in The Canada Report’s coverage of [a Halton Region health warning after a potent synthetic opioid was detected](https://www.thecanadareport.ca/halton-nitazene-drug-alert/) in the local drug supply. That broader pattern of toxic, unpredictable street drugs helps explain why officials are treating the latest isotonitazene finding as especially dangerous.

RCMP said isotonitazene is considered up to 50 times stronger than fentanyl and carries a very high risk of overdose.

## Fentanyl Risks Remain Unpredictable

RCMP also warned that illicit drugs in the Salmon Arm area could contain fentanyl.

“The effects of fentanyl are unpredictable,” Hodges said. “Users have no idea of the level of purity or the potency of what they take.”

Police are also on the lookout for cychlorphine, which is thought to be about 10 times more potent than fentanyl. Hodges described it as part of a newer class of laboratory-made opioids and said there are no test strips that can detect it.

“Cychlorphine is rare now but may become more common,” he said.

## RCMP advice on naloxone and using drugs with a buddy

For people using illicit drugs, RCMP advised having a buddy present and carrying naloxone. Police said both people should know how to use it.

## Call 911 Immediately

RCMP advised anyone experiencing an overdose, or witnessing one, to call 911 immediately.

## What we don't know yet

- The specific drug involved in the Salmon Arm overdoses has not been identified.
