Six people were injured after a vehicle drove into pedestrians early Saturday at the Festival Western de St-Tite in Saint-Tite, Que., turning a pre-dawn gathering into an active police investigation. Police were called to Boulevard St-Joseph at about 4:30 a.m. The vehicle fled the scene and was later found in the Quebec City region, where a man in his 20s was arrested about an hour after the collision. Investigators are to question him, and police say it remains unclear whether the incident was intentional. ## Investigation continues on Saint-Joseph The injured people were taken to hospital with varying injuries. Their exact conditions were not fully known at the time of reporting. Saint-Joseph Boulevard and nearby streets were closed as investigators worked at the scene. The closures covered the stretch between Du Couvent and Moulin streets, including Rue du Moulin and Rue du Couvent. The uncertainty surrounding the incident has left many key questions unanswered. Police have not determined what led to the collision, and their investigation remains ongoing. Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette said her thoughts were with the victims, their loved ones and all those affected. “The ongoing investigation will determine the causes of this act,” she wrote, adding that she was closely monitoring the situation. ## Festival plans remain unchanged Despite the early-morning collision, festival officials said the Festival Western de St-Tite would continue as planned. In a statement, organizers described what happened as “an isolated incident beyond our control” and said their thoughts were with those involved and their families. “The safety of our festival-goers, volunteers, and staff remains our top priority,” the statement said. “The Festival is a festive event where everyone should feel safe.” The decision to proceed comes as police continue their work on and around Boulevard St-Joseph, with traffic redirected from the closed streets. ## Political leaders urge answers The incident prompted messages of sympathy and condemnation from Quebec political leaders. Fréchette said the investigation would establish what happened. She also said she was in contact with Ian Lafrenière, the deputy premier and minister of domestic security. Lafrenière said few details were known and that resources were being mobilized, while thanking first responders. Parti Québécois Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon said his thoughts were with the injured and those who witnessed what he called a “distressing scene” in Saint-Tite. He thanked first responders and said Quebecers should be able to gather and celebrate safely. Québec solidaire leader Ruba Ghazal also offered condolences to those hurt and their families, saying she hoped authorities would quickly clarify what happened.
