Four people died after a private helicopter crashed and caught fire in a field in Quebec’s Sainte-Brigide-d’Iberville area Saturday afternoon, turning a routine emergency call into a major aviation investigation. The crash occurred near Rang des Écossais, off Highway 10, at about 2:30 p.m. ET. There were no survivors among the four people aboard. ## Helicopter Reported in Distress Early information from police indicates the helicopter was in distress shortly after takeoff before it crashed. The aircraft caught fire in the field, and first responders brought the blaze under control within about an hour. “The information that we have is that it was shortly after take-off that the helicopter was in distress and then crashed,” Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Sgt. Valérie Beauchamp said at a news conference. Authorities had not initially confirmed who owned the helicopter, where it had taken off from, or the identities of those killed. That uncertainty has left many of the central questions around the flight unanswered as investigators begin their work. A local festival, Les Félixeries, posted a tribute to a pilot it said had flown helicopter tours in the area, calling her “our favorite pilot of the past three years.” The festival said it was extending sympathies to the pilot’s partner, family, friends and others who knew her through “her passion.” ## Major Crimes Unit Takes File Once the fire was contained, the Sûreté du Québec’s major crimes unit took over the file and began investigating the circumstances of the crash. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is also deploying investigators to the site to gather information and determine the cause. Beauchamp said it was too early for investigators to draw conclusions. “The investigators just arrived on the scene as we speak,” she said. “They will analyze the scene, gather as much information as possible regarding the causes and circumstances of what happened.” The TSB investigation will run alongside the police inquiry. Transport Canada is also set to appoint a minister’s observer to monitor the safety board’s work. ## Ottawa Offers Condolences Federal Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said the government was monitoring the situation and expressed condolences to everyone affected by the tragedy. “My thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy,” MacKinnon said. For now, the investigation remains focused on the moments after takeoff and the circumstances that led to the helicopter going down near Rang des Écossais.
