What Stegemann believed about her siblings during the cognitive assessment tied to MAiD consent

heritage.org: Stegmann failed the cognitive assessment by claiming she had zero siblings even though she had 13.

dailymail.com: Stegmann believed that two of her surviving siblings were dead, according to her granddaughter.

internewscast.com: Stegmann reportedly believed that two surviving siblings had already died.

Allegations described here are not proven in court unless stated.

The death of an 83-year-old Ontario woman has sharpened scrutiny of Canada’s medical assistance in dying program, as her family alleges Brigitte Stegemann was euthanized against her will after failing an assessment meant to establish informed consent.

Stegemann’s family says she died covered in her own blood during the MAiD procedure. They allege she had repeatedly rejected MAiD because of her Christian beliefs and appeared shocked when her granddaughter told her she was expected to die that Friday.

## A Family’s Account of Consent

Stegemann had been diagnosed with stage four stomach cancer earlier in the year. Her granddaughter, Brigitte Kranendonk, says the family had discussed MAiD with her, but that Stegemann did not want it.

According to the family, care-home staff continued discussing MAiD while Kranendonk was away. They allege staff used vague language, referring to “medicine” that would take away pain and “make her feel at peace,” rather than speaking directly about death.

The family also alleges Stegemann failed a cognitive assessment intended to determine whether she could give informed consent, but was still cleared for the procedure.

Kranendonk has described asking her grandmother plainly whether she knew she would die on Friday. Stegemann was visibly shocked, Kranendonk said, and cried for an extended period. “I’ve made a mistake,” she reportedly said.

## Allegations About the Procedure

The family says the procedure itself was traumatic. They allege an attempt to establish an IV or administer an injection went wrong, causing extensive bleeding.

Kranendonk said her grandmother did not respond when the doctor indicated he would proceed. “My Oma is not moving,” she said. “She doesn’t open her eyes. She doesn’t nod. She doesn't say anything, and the doctor just said: ‘Okay, well, I’m going to proceed.’”

The family alleges the procedure went ahead despite that lack of response.

According to AMAC Newsline, local authorities have opened an investigation into Stegemann’s MAiD death.

## Mental-Illness Expansion Paused

The case emerged as the federal government announced an indefinite suspension of a planned expansion of MAiD eligibility for people whose sole medical condition is mental illness. That expansion had been scheduled to begin in March 2027.

Justice Minister Sean Fraser said the government believed an indefinite suspension was the right approach because there is no consensus on the issue and because of concerns about whether mental illnesses can be reliably assessed for MAiD eligibility.

“While there is not a perfect consensus on this issue, we believe this is the correct approach,” Fraser said.

The pause does not resolve broader questions about safeguards, consent and how medical practitioners should approach patients facing serious illness, disability or psychological distress.

## Psychiatrists Warn of Rushed Decisions

Those questions were also raised by psychiatrists Dr. Gary Rodin and Dr. Madeline Li in a New York Times opinion piece. The two doctors warned that MAiD is increasingly being used as a form of “therapeutic suicide,” arguing that too many patients are approved without sufficient opportunity for careful reflection with a health-care provider.

They cited reports of people seeking MAiD amid poverty or loneliness, circumstances they said can leave patients feeling they have no other options.

Rodin and Li also criticized a case involving a woman in her 70s who was approved for MAiD after she could no longer cook meals for her family.

Their argument was not that MAiD can never be meaningful. Rather, they warned against a system in which a decision of such finality can be reached without the careful, sustained medical reflection they believe patients deserve.
