## School Bus Rollover Near Swan River

A school bus carrying students from the Sapotaweyak Cree Nation rolled over on Highway 10, about 13 kilometres south of Mafeking, Manitoba, on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m., and icy road conditions are believed to have contributed to the crash. The bus was transporting approximately 15 students in grades nine to 12 when it overturned.

## Injuries and Emergency Response

Four individuals sustained significant but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to the hospital. Several other students received treatment for injuries at the scene before being taken to the hospital as well. Emergency services responded swiftly, with the injured being assessed at the Swan Valley Health Centre. Parents of the affected students traveled to Swan River to be with their children.

## Code Orange Alerts Issued

In response to the incident, Shared Health and Prairie Mountain Health issued Code Orange alerts at both the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg and the Swan Valley Health Centre. A Code Orange is a readiness stage activated during potential large-scale incidents, such as multi-vehicle crashes or mass casualties, to assess and allocate necessary resources.

## Weather Conditions and Safety Concerns

Chief Nelson Genaille of the Sapotaweyak Cree Nation highlighted the hazardous weather conditions, noting that rain from the previous day had led to black ice on the roads. This treacherous condition is suspected to have played a significant role in the rollover. The RCMP is continuing to investigate the incident and will provide updates as more information becomes available.

## Community Impact and Support

The Sapotaweyak Cree Nation is located approximately 425 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg and about 100 kilometres northeast of Swan River. The community is rallying to support the affected families, with local leaders emphasizing the importance of ensuring student safety during school commutes. As the investigation unfolds, the focus remains on the recovery of the injured and the prevention of similar incidents in the future.
