London Police Service Chief Thai Truong has ordered a criminal investigation after a video surfaced appearing to show London officers leaving a Toronto restaurant and getting into an unmarked police vehicle with alcohol visible inside and a service-issued firearm stored in a way that raised concerns. The incident occurred in Toronto on June 24, 2026, following a police funeral. One senior London police officer has been suspended with pay while the investigations proceed. No criminal charges have been announced, and the officers involved have not been publicly identified. ## Video Referred to Toronto Police Truong said he personally reviewed the video and immediately referred the matter to the Toronto Police Service for a criminal investigation focused on the handling and storage of the firearm. “The video shows a service-issued firearm stored in circumstances that raised concerns,” Truong said in a statement. He also said alcohol was visible inside the unmarked police vehicle. At this stage, he said, the legal threshold for a suspension without pay has not been met. “A suspension with pay should not be interpreted as minimizing the seriousness of the matter,” he said. “It reflects the legal framework that governs authority of a chief of police at this stage of the proceedings.” The chief also stressed that the expectations facing officers apply across the service, and carry particular weight for those in leadership roles. “Those expectations apply to every member of our service and are especially important for those entrusted with leadership responsibilities,” Truong said. He said every member is entitled to a fair and impartial process, adding that he would not prejudge the outcome while also acknowledging a responsibility to alert the public and investigate concerns involving officers. ## Criminal Review Before Discipline Process The Toronto Police Service investigation will proceed first. Once it concludes, the conduct of the London officers involved will be reviewed through the process set out under the Community Safety and Policing Act. That two-step path leaves key questions unresolved, including whether investigators will recommend charges. For now, the central allegation under criminal review concerns the handling and storage of the police firearm. Truong did not identify the funeral in his public statement.
