Allegations described here are not proven in court unless stated. Police have seized about $42,000 worth of illicit nicotine products following a coordinated investigation in the B.C. Interior communities of Nelson and Castlegar. The Sept. 16 operation involved Nelson RCMP and the B.C. Highway Patrol, which executed search warrants at two commercial businesses as police investigated the sale of contraband nicotine pouches. The investigation remains ongoing, and no charges had been laid at the time of the reports. ## Counterfeit Products Among Seizure Investigators believe many of the pouches seized were counterfeit and designed to resemble well-known brands, RCMP said. The products are not treated in Canada as ordinary retail goods. Health Canada regulates nicotine pouches as therapeutic smoking cessation aids, not as recreational lifestyle products. That distinction is central to the enforcement action in Nelson and Castlegar. Legally authorized nicotine pouches must meet specific nicotine concentration requirements and can only be sold behind a pharmacy counter. Products sold through convenience stores, gas stations or other retailers without Health Canada authorization are illegal in Canada. ## Youth Protection at Centre Police emphasized that the restrictions are intended to limit young people’s exposure to nicotine products. “The restriction of oral nicotine products to pharmacy counters exists to protect youth from highly addictive substances and ensure these products are only accessed under medical guidance,” said Nelson RCMP Const. Shaun Kennedy. Fruit- and candy-flavoured nicotine pouches are prohibited in Canada in an effort to reduce their appeal to youth. The same regulatory approach requires authorized products to remain behind pharmacy counters rather than being displayed for ordinary retail purchase. The seizure puts a local focus on a national regulatory line: nicotine pouches may be sold legally only within Health Canada’s rules, and not as recreational products marketed through unauthorized stores. ## Investigation Still Underway Police have not announced charges in connection with the search warrants. Any potential charges are pending further investigation, followed by review and approval by the Public Prosecution Service of Canada. RCMP Cpl. Brett Urano, a division media relations officer, said investigators believed many of the seized products had been made to look like familiar brands.
