Why some reports were counted once

cbc.ca and kitchener.citynews.ca — the same report, published near-identically, counted once.

When several outlets publish the identical article — often because they ran the same wire-service story — we count it as one source, not several, so the count reflects independent reporting rather than how widely one story was republished.

Allegations described here are not proven in court unless stated.

A 13-year-old student has been arrested after threats were made in an online forum to shoot students at a Guelph high school.

The threats, posted in an online chat on Tuesday afternoon, targeted two specific students as well as the wider school community. The school principal contacted Guelph police after learning about the messages from other students.

## Police Responded Tuesday Night

Guelph police became aware of the threats Tuesday afternoon and arrested the boy at his home later that night.

He has been charged with three counts of uttering threats and was held in custody for a bail hearing on Wednesday.

The sequence began with students bringing the online messages to the attention of their principal, who then contacted police. The report prompted an investigation that led to an arrest the same evening.

## Threats Reached Beyond Two Students

While two students were specifically targeted, the messages also referenced the broader school community, police said.

That wider scope is central to the concern surrounding the case. Messages posted online can quickly move beyond the people initially named, reaching classmates, school staff and families who are left to grapple with what they have read and whether it may translate into harm.

“The Guelph Police Service recognizes the importance of school safety and how threats of this nature can be difficult for students, staff, and their families,” police said in a statement.

## School Safety at the Centre

Police said they take threats involving schools seriously and will work with school boards to identify those responsible when a suspect is identified.

“Police take incidents like this extremely seriously and will continue to work closely with school boards to help identify the individuals responsible and lay the appropriate criminal charges when a suspect is identified,” the statement said.

In this case, the school’s principal learned of the threats through other students before contacting police. The arrest followed later that night.

## Charges Head to Bail Hearing

The boy faces three counts of uttering threats. He was held in custody for a bail hearing Wednesday.

The allegations arise from threats made online, but their impact extends into the school community identified in the messages. Police have emphasized the difficulty such threats can create for students, staff and families, even as the criminal case moves forward.
