Gander is preparing to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a commemoration that is already filling rooms across the Newfoundland town. The town will not be as crowded as it was during the crisis itself, but the milestone anniversary is drawing renewed attention to the place where thousands of diverted passengers were suddenly welcomed by strangers. ## Remembering the plane people Mayor Percy Farwell has described the commemoration as both a remembrance of the people lost in the attacks and an acknowledgement of the bond formed between Gander and the stranded travellers. “We also acknowledge the connection that transpired with our little neck of the woods here and how meaningful that turned out to be,” Farwell said in an interview with The Canadian Press. He said the response was about meeting practical needs, but also emotional ones. “We were responding to people that were in distress and needed a lot of life’s necessities like food and shelter,” Farwell said. “Mostly they needed love and compassion because it was a very distressing time.” The travellers became known locally as the “plane people,” and the town’s response has remained a defining story of the days after Sept. 11\. Schools, church halls and private homes became places of refuge, as residents provided essential support to people who had no way to continue their journeys. ## A story carried by music Gander’s actions were later recounted in “Come From Away,” the musical that brought the town’s story to international audiences. Farwell has said the community was initially unsure about people turning its experience into a musical, describing the local memory of those days more humbly as “a bunch of people making sandwiches.” But the story endured because those acts of care became something larger in the memories of the stranded travellers and the people who helped them. The anniversary now returns that story to Gander itself, where the emphasis is not only on what residents did, but on why they did it. “So we tend to understand that if someone’s got a problem, it’s everybody’s job to help them fix it,” Farwell said of the local culture. ## Dignitaries expected for ceremony Dignitaries expected at the commemoration include Governor General Louise Arbour, former prime minister Jean Chrétien and U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra. “This year the guest list is a little more high-end, if you want to describe it that way,” Farwell said. According to NS News, Gander plans a formal Sept. 11 ceremony at its arena, with speeches by dignitaries and performances by Newfoundland musicians. Hoekstra, in a statement reported by The Canadian Press, said the attacks left a lasting mark on him and the United States, and that the people of Newfoundland showed what community can mean during a dark time. “On this 25th anniversary, I am returning to say a heartfelt thank you not just on behalf of those who were stranded, but for an entire nation that remains moved by Gander’s generosity,” Hoekstra said. “I look forward to meeting many of those who opened their hearts and homes and honouring the enduring bond built that week.” For Gander, the commemoration is a return to a week defined by fear, disruption and grief, but also by a local response that turned strangers into guests.
