The day Elon Musk made his initial X comments about Quebec and the other provinces separating from Canada.

web5.jamaica-gleaner.com: Musk weighed in on the separatist debate Wednesday in a post on X.

ctvnews.ca: Musk took to his social media platform Tuesday to say Quebec should become independent and separate from Canada.

This summary is compiled from the independent sources listed above.

Elon Musk’s call for Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan to separate from Canada drew a quick and unusually unified political response: no.

The billionaire posted on X that Quebec should separate, then said Alberta and Saskatchewan should do the same. His comments referenced Quebec premier-designate Paul St-Pierre Plamondon’s view that the province’s independence will be realized “one day.”

## Carney says Canadians decide

Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected Musk’s intervention, saying the country’s future belongs to Canadians.

“The future of Canada will be decided by Canadians and the priorities of Canadians, the priorities of the people of Quebec,” Carney said.

He also framed the response as a defence of Canadian self-determination, saying Canadians should be free from interference by “foreign governments and large tech firms that think they can tell us what to do.”

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre struck a similarly dismissive note, calling Musk’s remarks “silly tweets” and saying they have no effect on what Canadians do. Poilievre urged people to focus on affordability instead.

## Prairie premiers push back

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe’s answer was brief. He replied to Musk with one word: “No.”

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also rejected the call for separation. Smith said separatist sentiment in Alberta has weakened as governments work to address Albertans’ concerns, and she reaffirmed her support for Alberta remaining in Canada.

“Our government, our Caucus, and our party support Alberta remaining in Canada,” Smith said.

Her position will be tested against a live political question this fall. Alberta’s Oct. 19 vote will ask whether the province should remain in Canada or move toward a second binding referendum on separation.

Smith has said she supports remaining in Canada and has argued that “Canada can work.” At the same time, she has said the vote should proceed so Albertans on both sides of the issue have a voice.

Moe, for his part, has said he would not block a citizen-led petition or plebiscite on separation in Saskatchewan if it met the legal threshold set by the province.

## Quebec’s new government

Musk’s posts arrived after the Parti Québécois won Quebec’s provincial election and formed a minority government, with St-Pierre Plamondon as premier-designate.

St-Pierre Plamondon has promised an independence referendum, though he says it will not take place before U.S. President Donald Trump leaves office.

That timetable leaves Quebec’s constitutional debate present but unresolved, even as the new government prepares to take office. Musk’s intervention placed it alongside Alberta and Saskatchewan’s grievances, but the premiers in both Prairie provinces publicly rejected his prescription.

## A debate Canadians own

The political responses did not erase the underlying debates over provincial autonomy, independence and how federal and provincial governments respond to regional concerns. Alberta will still hold its October vote. Quebec’s premier-designate still intends to pursue a referendum at a later date. Saskatchewan’s law still allows for a citizen-led process that meets its legal requirements.

But Canada’s leading federal and provincial voices were clear that an outside tech executive does not get to settle those questions.

For Carney, the dividing line was simple: Canada’s future, and the future of its provinces, will be decided by Canadians.
