A family shopping trip at a southwest Calgary Safeway turned into a police arrest and firearms seizure after officers say a stranger began shouting political remarks and threatened to shoot a man while his family was present. The incident began around noon on Sept. 3, when police say a 49-year-old man approached the family, made comments about tariffs, then shouted anti-Canadian and pro-American remarks. ## A threat inside Safeway Police allege the encounter escalated when the stranger threatened to get a shotgun and shoot the man while the man’s family was there. “This was an extremely dangerous situation that could have turned out much worse than it did,” Staff Sgt. Joe Hebert said in a statement. The alleged threat came in a public grocery store, during the middle of the day, with the man’s family nearby. Police have described the accused as a stranger to the family. ## Employees intervened quickly Store employees stepped in during the incident, and the suspect was escorted out of the Safeway. That intervention appears to have marked the end of the confrontation inside the store, but not the end of the police response. After the suspect left, police located him at a nearby residence. Hebert credited the response from witnesses and officers for bringing the situation under control. “Situations like this can change quickly,” he said, adding that police were able to “quickly locate and safely apprehend the suspect before he further endangered the community.” ## Gunfire heard at residence After the suspect left the store, police found him at a nearby home. Officers say the suspect was seen with a gun at the residence, and police heard gunfire inside the home. No injuries were reported. Police arrested the suspect at the residence within an hour of the initial encounter at Safeway. ## Firearms and ammunition seized After the arrest, police seized two firearms, including a loaded 12-gauge shotgun. Officers also seized ammunition and a BB gun. The seizure is central to the seriousness of the case. Police had alleged that the threat inside the store specifically involved the suspect saying he would get a shotgun and shoot the man. ## Accused due in court The accused has been identified as 49-year-old James Dean Garriock. Garriock faces several charges, including uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm and possession of an unlicensed weapon. He is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 17.
