Allegations described here are not proven in court unless stated.

Kimberly Polman, a Squamish, B.C., woman, has pleaded guilty in B.C. Supreme Court to leaving Canada to participate in the activities of the Islamic State.

The plea came one month before her trial was scheduled to begin on Nov. 9\. At the time of the plea, no sentencing date had been set. A second terrorism charge, related to participating in the activities of a terrorist group, remained part of the case.

## A plea before trial

The offence to which Polman pleaded guilty carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Her legal team said the plea meant Polman was “taking responsibility for her actions in 2015,” when she left Canada to join her online ISIS husband. In comments reported after the plea, the team described the path to this point as a long one and said she had support from family and community resources as the case moves toward sentencing.

Polman has been subject to a terrorism peace bond since November 2023.

## Years between Syria and court

Polman was captured by U.S.-backed Kurdish fighters in 2019 and held in a Syrian detention camp for nearly four years before being repatriated to Canada in 2022.

Her time in detention has formed a significant part of the public account surrounding her case. Reports said she suffered serious health problems, including hepatitis. Family members and others described her as living with post-traumatic stress and other challenges.

Before Polman’s return to Canada, her sister told The Canadian Press that Polman had met an Islamic State fighter online and married him, but that they later separated and Polman denounced the group.

Her family has also described her as co-operative, compliant and respectful in dealings with authorities. They have said she is no longer associated with ISIS and fears for her life because she believes she is a target of the group.

## Prosecutors and RCMP allegations

Prosecutors alleged Polman was committed to ISIS after leaving Canada to join her online ISIS husband.

The RCMP alleged she was part of Nusaybah Katibah, an all-female ISIS battalion that provided weapons training to women. Those allegations have been central to the wider case, while Polman’s guilty plea specifically concerns her leaving Canada to participate in the activities of the terrorist group.

The distinction matters as the court process continues. The guilty plea resolves the leaving-Canada charge, but the second terrorism charge remains part of the case.

## Sentencing still to come

Polman’s case now moves toward sentencing, where the court will consider the offence to which she admitted guilt. No date had been set when the plea was entered.

For Polman’s legal team, the plea is framed as an acceptance of responsibility for a decision made in 2015\. For prosecutors, it is a conviction tied to participation in the activities of ISIS.

The coming sentencing process will be the next formal stage in a case that has stretched from Polman’s departure from Canada, through years in Syrian detention, to her repatriation and return to a Canadian courtroom.
