Why some reports were counted once

Global News and Airdrie City View — the same Canadian Press report, counted once.

When several outlets publish the identical article — most often because they all ran the same wire story from an agency like The Canadian Press — we count it as one source, not several. That keeps our source count a measure of independent reporting, not how widely a single story was syndicated.

This summary is compiled from the independent sources listed above.

The World Famous Gopher Hole Museum has closed until further notice, leaving one of Alberta’s most eccentric roadside attractions searching for what it calls a new “burrow.”

“That's all folks! Thank you for 30 great years,” the Torrington museum said in a social-media post announcing the closure. “The World Famous Gopher Hole Museum is now closed until further notice while we try to figure out a new burrow.”

## A home for tiny characters

Since opening to the public in 1996, the museum has spent about three decades drawing visitors into handmade scenes populated by taxidermied Richardson’s ground squirrels dressed as people and other characters.

The displays turn the small animals into figures of community life and popular culture, from hockey players and Mounties to musicians and craftspeople. For director Laural Kurta, the humour is part of the appeal, but not the whole story.

“Yes, it’s silly and the gophers are wearing funny clothes, and that’s part of why people come,” Kurta said. “But it also does tell the history of the community.”

“It’s not just Torrington,” she added. “It’s also the stories of small town Alberta.”

The attraction operates from two historic buildings: a former schoolhouse and a grain elevator office, joined by a small hallway. That unusual setting has helped shape the museum’s character, but Kurta says it can no longer meet the collection’s needs.

## Aging buildings force closure

Kurta said the buildings that house the museum are no longer suitable and must be replaced. The collection requires heat and humidity control to protect the taxidermied gophers, conditions the aging structures can no longer provide.

“We have done every patch repair, staple, spackle, everything we could possibly do,” Kurta said. “It is just at its end.”

She said the buildings had lasted far beyond early expectations. “Nobody thought this place would last more than five years,” Kurta said. “The museum has now been open for 30, and it’s busier than ever.”

For now, the closure means the gophers are no longer available for visitors to see in their familiar Torrington home. But Kurta has stressed that the museum is not disappearing.

## The gophers will travel

The museum plans to remain present in the community while it looks for a new site. Kurta said some dioramas and displays will be lent to other museums and events until a permanent home is ready.

“We’re not completely gone,” she said. “We’re just going to focus more on how we’re going represent in the community until we’re able to rebuild.”

Some of the displays already made a trip to the Calgary Comic Expo earlier this year, offering a pop-up glimpse of Torrington’s dressed-up rodents beyond the museum’s walls.

The travelling exhibits are intended to keep the collection visible during the search for a building that can properly house it.

## Fundraising for a new burrow

A fundraising campaign is underway to build a new home for the museum. The attraction has operated primarily through admission-by-donation and other support since it launched with a provincial startup grant.

That history of making do is part of the museum’s identity. Kurta said she felt compelled to continue the project for her family and for the people who have embraced it over the years.

Now, its future depends on finding a space that can protect the collection while preserving the playful spirit that made the museum a destination in the first place. The doors may be closed, but the tiny cast of gophers is expected to keep making appearances while organizers work toward reopening.
